Preparing for Real Independence
Leaving care should be a milestone, not a cliff edge.
For many young people, the transition to independence happens overnight. One day supported, the next expected to manage rent, bills, and benefits alone.
SMART MONEY KIDS provides specialist financial education programmes designed to make that transition stable, informed, and sustainable.
We equip care-experienced young people with the confidence, structure, and financial understanding to thrive independently, not just survive.
Our programmes are designed in partnership with local authorities and supported housing providers, ensuring they align seamlessly with leaving-care pathways, EET goals, and tenancy sustainment objectives.
The Problem
Every year, thousands of young people leave care unprepared for the realities of financial independence.
-
1 in 3 care leavers fall into debt or arrears within their first year of tenancy.
-
Over 40% become NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) within two years.
-
Many face eviction, housing instability, or long-term financial stress.
These challenges stem not from lack of ambition, but lack of preparation.
Without structured financial learning, young people are left vulnerable to debt traps, borrowing risks, and crisis interventions.
For councils, this results in repeat referrals, arrears, and escalating costs.
SMART MONEY KIDS exists to prevent that.
The Solution
Our solution is direct, measurable, and preventative.
We deliver real-world financial education that builds capability through interactive learning, not lectures.
Each programme is designed for care leavers aged 16–25, delivered in supported housing, youth hubs, or as part of local authority leaving-care pathways.
We teach:
-
Budgeting for independence — rent, utilities, and real-world costs.
-
Understanding benefits — UC, advances, deductions, and rights.
-
Avoiding debt traps — payday loans, BNPL, and credit misuse.
-
Building credit safely — how bills, accounts, and habits shape the future.
-
Mindset training — resilience, accountability, and self-belief.
Our trauma-informed approach ensures every young person learns in a safe, empowering environment.
